Exploring six exhibitions through virtual tours

Belfius Art Collection
Exploring six exhibitions through virtual tours
Summarize this case with:

Art, space and discovery

Since 2015, Poppr has created virtual tours for the Belfius Art Collection. Explore six exhibitions in 360° and discover artworks in their exhibition setting, directly in your browser.

Discovering art beyond the exhibition space

An exhibition tells a story through artworks, sightlines and the order in which visitors discover its rooms. Individual reproductions capture only part of that relationship. For the Belfius Art Collection, Poppr created virtual tours that make the exhibition setting part of the online experience.

Visitors open a tour in their browser and choose where to look. They explore the space in 360°, pause beside a work and use information points to find out more. This gives curiosity room to develop: visitors can take in the exhibition first, then explore individual works in greater depth.

From photography to an interactive virtual tour

Poppr’s contribution covers 360° photography, postproduction and the development of the tour interface, including navigation and information points. Images and interaction work together: the panoramas show the setting, while the interface helps visitors move through it and discover the content.

That combination matters for an art collection. Visitors should be able to understand where a work sits in the exhibition while having the freedom to spend time on a detail. A virtual tour supports both ways of looking, without requiring everyone to follow the same route.

Each exhibition also needs its own approach. The selected works change, as do the relationships between them and the story told by their arrangement. Each tour therefore preserves a particular presentation of the Belfius Art Collection, rather than treating every exhibition as an interchangeable space.

An exhibition can remain open online

A temporary exhibition has a final opening day. A virtual tour can keep its arrangement available afterwards. The Belfius tours allow people to revisit earlier exhibitions and discover different presentations of the collection without being in the gallery.

For corporate art collections, museums and foundations, this offers a practical starting point: what should people be able to experience remotely, and what information will help them explore further? A useful digital exhibition starts with those questions. Its technology should serve the story and the way visitors want to encounter the art.
